Wyoming Census NotesPrior to the organization of Wyoming Territory, Wyoming which has a complicated territorial beginning, was included in the following U.S. census records which are online: 1850 Territorial Census of Utah $ 1860 Territorial Census of Fort Laramie 1860 Federal Census of Nebraska Territory 1860 Territorial Census Images of Nebraska $ An 1869 Wyoming Territorial Census was enumerated soon after the territory of Wyoming was formed and is available at the Wyoming State Archives on microfilm #2261365. Federal Wyoming Census Records are available to the public for the following census years: 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. Soundex Indexes are indexes for the Federal Wyoming census records, using the soundex code. They are available for census years: 1880, 1900 and 1920. 1890 Federal Wyoming Census Records were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap. The 1890 Special Veterans and Widows census schedules for Wyoming survived the fire and are often used as a substitute for the 1890 census. These schedules include Union soldiers and widows only. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. Wyoming State Census records were enumerated in 1875, 1878, 1885, 1905, 1915 and 1925, however, it should be noted they are incomplete and many of these Wyoming state census records contain statistical information only. Wyoming City Directories are available for many years and localities at the Wyoming State Archives. See

Wyoming (Territory 1868. Statehood 1890.) Most early settlers of Wyoming rolled in from the southern states with the prospect of raising cattle as there were thousands and thousands of wild cattle in the state. When the territory was first formed, there were between six and seven thousand white settlers along with many Indian tribes populating the area. Fort Laramie, a military outpost, famed as a stagecoach & pony express stop became a noted landmark on the Oregon Trail. Thousands of wild buffalo herds roamed the hills and plains of Wyoming. Important Wyoming census notes: Wyoming was included in Nebraska Territory in 1860 census records and in Utah Territory in 1850 census records.
