Wisconsin Census Notes
Census Records for Wisconsin Territory were enumerated in 1836, 1838, 1842, 1846, and 1847. Many
of these are incomplete, missing portions and counties.
See
1820-1890 Wisconsin Census at Ancestry.
Federal Wisconsin Census Records
are available to the public for the following census years: 1840, 1850,
1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930.
See
1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
Wisconsin State Census Records were
enumerated every 10 years beginning in 1855 and running through 1905.
The 1885 & 1895 WI state censuses are a great help in covering the years
surrounding the lost 1890 Federal census. Many of the WI state
census records are incomplete and the 1905 Wisconsin state census is the
only state census which lists the names of all family members. All of
the Wisconsin state censuses are available for research at the
Wisconsin Historical Society.
See Wisconsin State Censuses, 1895 & 1905 at Ancestry
Also See FamilySearch.org.
1890 Federal Wisconsin Census Records were destroyed by a 1921
warehouse fire.
See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census,
Bridging the 1890 Census Gap.
The 1890 Special Veterans and Widows census schedules for
Wisconsin survived
the fire and are often used as a substitute for the 1890 census. These
schedules include Union soldiers and widows only.
See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.
