West Virginia Census Notes

Census records prior to 1863 (the time of the split of eastern and western Virginia) will be listed in Virginia so be sure to check Virginia Census Finder for earlier census records.

Federal West Virginia Census Records are available to the public for census years: 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal WV Census schedules were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census.

The 1890 Veterans and Widows Census for West Virginia did survive and is a valuable resource which is often used as a census substitute. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

West Virginia State Census Records: There are not any known census records enumerated by the state of WV, however there were early censuses taken by the state of Virginia in 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785 & 1786. These early censuses would have included what is today known as West Virginia. See Heads of Families Index created from 1782-1785 Virginia state census records at Ancestry.

For help with county formations before and after the split of Virginia See: Virginia and W. Virginia Counties History.
