Working with Census Returns
To make the most of the census of Great Britain,
you need to know what information it contains, how to apply this
information, and facts about access. What follows is a concise guide to
essential information (but the best teacher is practical experience).
Apart from minor differences in supplementary details, the census
returns for 1851 through 1891 provide the following:
*
Address or location
*
Name of each person in the household
*
Marital status
*
Sex
*
Relationship to the head of the household
*
Age
*
Occupation
*
Birthplace
However, the first nominal census (1841) is different .......... Read more.

If you are new to UK research, see RootsWeb Lesson 28 - Tracing English and Welsh Ancestors
Many sets of official records were kept for
England and Wales together. For almost 500 years, Welsh government
business has been conducted in London. Locating and using
genealogy records are very similar for both countries.
Census enumerations have been taken every
10 years since 1801 with the exception of 1941. The most recent
year available to the public is 1901.
The 1841 census is
the earliest census containing names. Individual data contained in
census records has increased with each census year.
A "Stray" is:
a recorded event in
which a person is described in the record as being from or connected
with, a place (in this case a County) outside the area in which they
normally lived.
