Virginia Census Notes
1790 Federal Virginia Census Records were lost unfortunately. Using state census records, a reconstructed census has been created and is often used when searching for ancestors in Virginia during this time period. See Heads of Families Index created from 1782-1785 Virginia state census records at Ancestry.
Federal Virginia census records are available to the public for census years 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
1890 Federal Virginia Census Records were completely lost in a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows Census survived the fire and may be used as a census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. There is an 1890 census copy for Floyd County. Also See Local Copies of 1890 Census Records.
Virginia State Census Records: The state of Virginia took a census in the following years: 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785 & 1786. All of these censuses are incomplete. See Heads of Families Index created from 1782-1785 Virginia state census records at Ancestry.
1863 Virginia Split - The state of Virginia was split during the Civil War. Many of the Virginia counties are now part of West Virginia. If your ancestor lived in one of these counties, you will need to search for census records in both states.
