Virginia Census Notes:

1790 Federal Virginia Census Records were lost but reconstructed records have been created from tax records as a substitute and can prove quite useful when searching in this time period.

1890 Federal Virginia Census Records were completely destroyed by fire in 1921, however,  the Veterans and Widows Census did survive and is often used for searching in that census year.  There is an exception for Floyd County.  See this.

1863 Virginia Split - Many early counties in Virginia were split off into West Virginia.  If your ancestor is in one of these counties, you will need to search for census records in both states.
