Vermont Census Notes

The 1790 Federal Vermont Census was actually taken in 1791 when Vermont became a state. This can cause confusion as an individual may be enumerated in the 1791 Federal census of Vermont but could have actually been living in a different state in 1790. When conducting genealogical research in Vermont, beware of this common pitfall.

Federal Vermont census records are available to the public for census years 1790 (1791), 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal Vermont census records were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the schedules for Veterans and Widows census did survive and is often helpful for locating ancestors in that census year. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Vermont State Census Records: A state census was taken by the state of Vermont in 1785. It is incomplete. The 1791 census enumerated in Vermont is NOT a state census. It was the first Federal census taken in the state.
