Texas Census NotesFederal Texas census records are available to the public for census years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Federal Texas Census Schedules were destroyed by
a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of very small fragments of Ellis
County, Hood County, Rusk County and Kaufman County. See 1890 Federal Census Fragments at Ancestry.
1890 Texas Veteran and Widows Census Schedules survived the fire
and are often used as a census substitute. See
1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. Greer County, Texas became Greer County, Oklahoma.
There were boundary disputes and the boundary lines kept changing. Special
boundary research is required for this area. See
Texas State Census Records: The state of Texas did not take any state censuses. There were censuses taken under the Spanish and Mexican governments. Some of these may be found in "Residents of Texas 1782-1836" and "The First Census of Texas 1829-1836". See 1732-1836 Residents of Texas. Texas County Tax Lists may prove helpful in locating ancestors in early Texas. Many of the early tax record indexes are included in the Texas census 1820-1890 at Ancestry.
