Tennessee Census Notes
Since Tennessee didn't become a state until 1796, it was not enumerated in the 1790 Federal Census.
1800 Federal Tennessee census records were completely lost. This leaves us without early Tennessee census schedules and it is most unfortunate for those of us searching for ancestors in Tennessee during this time period. Early Tennessee tax records may prove to be helpful. See Early TN Tax Records & Earliest TN County Records.
1810 Federal Tennessee census records exist only for part of Grainger County and all of Rutherford County. All other counties are missing.
1820 Federal Tennessee census records only survived for 20 eastern counties. They are: Bedford, Davidson, Dickson, Franklin, Giles, Hardin, Hickman, Humphreys, Jackson, Lawrence, Lincoln, Maury, Montgomery, Overton, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Shelby, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Warren, Wayne, White, Williamson and Wilson.
Federal Tennessee census records are complete for census years 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
1890 Federal Tennessee census records were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the schedules for Veterans and Widows census did survive and is often helpful for locating ancestors in that census year. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.
There is an 1891 Tennessee Voters List which is often used as a census substitute for the missing 1890 Federal census. It is included in the 1810-1891 Tennessee Census Records & Voters Lists at Ancestry.
