New York Census Notes

Federal New York Census Records were taken every decade beginning in 1790. They are available to the public for census years 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal New York Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of some small fragments of Suffolk and Westchester Counties. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap.

The 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules for New York state did survive and are often used as a helpful census substitute. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for New York Federal census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880,  1900, and 1920.

New York State Census Records Availability - Due to the high volume of immigration, the state of New York took a census enumeration every 10 years between 1825 and 1875, then again in 1892, 1905, 1915 and 1925. NY state censuses taken before 1915 are kept at the county level. Contact the County Clerk in the county of interest to ask where the originals are held for that county.  The 1865 & 1875 NY state census records included schedules which recorded marriages and deaths occurring in the census year. These may prove helpful if you are lucky enough to have ancestors who had these events occur during the census year.  Most of the New York state census records are not indexed.  Some of these early NY state censuses are available online at New York State Census Collection at Ancestry. For more helpful information about these early NY censuses See More New York State Census Records Info.
