South Dakota Census Notes 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885 Territorial Census Records schedules exist for Dakota Territory which then included all counties in what is now known as North and South Dakota. Federal South Dakota Census Records exist and are available to the public for census years 1860 Dakota Territory, 1870 Dakota Territory, 1880 Dakota Territory, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. 1890 Federal South Dakota Census Records were destroyed by fire with the exception of one family in Jefferson Township of Union County. The 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive the fire and can provide a helpful census substitute for the lost 1890 South Dakota census records. South Dakota State Census Records: Census enumerations were taken every 10 years between 1895 and 1945. More about SD State Census Records
