South Dakota Census NotesDakota Territory Census Records: What is today known as North Dakota and South Dakota was established in 1861 as Dakota Territory. Territorial census records for Dakota Territory were enumerated in 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885. These records include all counties in both North Dakota and South Dakota. See 1885 Special Territorial Census of South Dakota at Ancestry. Federal South Dakota Census Records are available to the public for the following census years: 1860 Dakota Territory, 1870 Dakota Territory, 1880 Dakota Territory, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Federal South Dakota Census Records were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of one family in Jefferson Township of Union County. The 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive the fire and are often used as a helpful census substitute for the lost 1890 South Dakota census records. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. South Dakota State Census Records: The state of South Dakota took the first state census in 1895 and every decade thereafter. State census years include 1895, 1905, 1915, 1925, 1935 & 1945. The 1905 SD state census included land descriptions. This is helpful to the genealogist as these land descriptions can be used to locate Federal land records. See 1895 State Census of South Dakota at Ancestry. SD Indian Census Records: There were several early censuses of South Dakota's Indian Reservations. Many of these are available on microfilm at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, The National Archives and in the South Dakota State Historical Society. See 1885-1940 US Indian Census Records at Ancestry & National Archives Indian Rolls Information.
