Pennsylvania Census Notes

1772 Tax Records for Northampton County, PA can prove helpful for locating Pennsylvania ancestors prior to 1790 when Federal census records began. These tax records are included in the 1772-1890 Pennsylvania Census Collection at Ancestry.

1798 Pennsylvania Tax Records (also known as the Pennsylvania Glass or Window Tax) may be a helpful tool to researchers as it contains many individuals not enumerated in the 1800 Federal census records for Pennsylvania.

Federal Pennsylvania census records begin in 1790 and a census was taken every decade thereafter. They are available to the public for the following census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1800 Federal Pennsylvania Census Records are missing part of the schedules for Westmoreland County.

1810 Federal Pennsylvania Census Records are missing some parts of the schedules for Bedford County, Cumberland County & Philadelphia County.

1890 Federal Pennsylvania Census Records were totally destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, but the Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive and may provide a helpful census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Pennsylvania State Census Records - While many states enumerated censuses of their own,  Pennsylvania does not have any known state census records.
