Oregon Census Notes: In 1842, the first Oregon census was taken of persons living south of the Columbia River in Oregon country. 1845 Oregon Territorial census records were taken for the following counties: Champoic (Now Marion Co.), Clackamas, Clatsop, Tuality (now Washington County), and Yamhill. 1846 Oregon census records exist for Yamhill County. A special 1849 Oregon census, enumerating males over age 21, was taken and still exists. In 1853 Washington Territory was split off from Oregon Territory and there were census enumerations in 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1858 and 1859 for large portions of Oregon. Oregon State Census records were taken every 10 years between 1865 and 1905. A handful of the state census survives: 1865 Benton, Columbia, Marion and Umatilla Counties. 1875 Lake, Umatilla and Wasco Counties. 1885 Linn and Umatilla Counties. 1895 Linn, Marion, Morrow and Multnomah Counties. 1905 Baker, Lane, Linn and Marion Counties. Federal Oregon census records are available for census years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. 1890 Federal census schedules were completely destroyed by fire, however the 1890 Veterans and Widows census did survive and can be a helpful alternative resource. NARA film #595 contains many census enumerations taken by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
