Oregon Census NotesThe first Oregon census was enumerated in 1842 and included persons in Oregon Territory who lived south of the Columbia River in Oregon Country. 1845 census records for Oregon Territory were enumerated and survived for the following counties: Champoic (now Marion County), Clackamas, Clatsop, Tuality (now Washington County), and Yamhill. 1845-1846 census records for Oregon Territory were enumerated and survived for Tuality County (now Washington County). 1846 census records for Oregon Territory were enumerated and survived for Yamhill County only. A special 1849 Oregon census which only enumerated males over age 21, was taken and survived intact. Washington Territory was carved from Oregon Territory in 1853 and census enumerations were taken for large portions of Oregon Territory in 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1858 and 1859. Many of these early Oregon Territorial censes are included in the 1841-1890 Oregon Census Records Collection at Ancestry. Oregon State Census records were enumerated every 10 years between 1865 and 1905. These are sparse and incomplete. The following Oregon State censuses survived: 1865 Benton, Columbia, Marion and Umatilla Counties. 1875 Lake, Umatilla and Wasco Counties. 1885 Linn and Umatilla Counties. 1895 Linn, Marion, Morrow and Multnomah Counties. 1905 Baker, Lane, Linn and Marion Counties. Federal Oregon census records begin with the Oregon Territorial census taken in 1850. A Federal census was conducted every ten years thereafter. The following census years are available to the public:1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Federal census schedules were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Veterans and Widows census survived the fire and may provide a helpful census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. NARA film #595 contains many relevant census enumerations taken by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
