Oklahoma Census Notes In 1819 when Arkansas Territory was established, it included present day Oklahoma. 1890 Territorial Oklahoma Census Records are very important. These comprise the first census of the area and is complete except for Edmond, Oklahoma County which was lost. Federal Oklahoma Census Records are available to the public for census years 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. Soundex code indexes for Federal Oklahoma census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1900, 1910, and 1920. 1890 Federal Oklahoma Census Records were completely destroyed by fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules for Oklahoma did survive the fire and can prove helpful as a census substitute. 1890 Oklahoma City Directories might be of help in this time period.

Oklahoma (Territory 1890. Statehood 1907.) Oklahoma lands became part of the Indiana Territory in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. In 1812 it was included with the Missouri Territory and by 1819 became part of the Arkansas Territory. Oklahoma was known for many years as I.T. (Indian Territory). The "great land runs" of 1891, 1893, and 1901 occurred when Indian lands were opened up to white settlers. People poured into the state with the great promise of land.
