Oklahoma Census Notes

In 1819 when Arkansas Territory was established, the area we call Oklahoma today was included. This can come into play when researching census records for Oklahoma ancestors.

1890 Oklahoma Territory Census Records are important as they comprise the first census of the Oklahoma Territory. This special census is complete with the exception of Edmond in Oklahoma County which was lost. See 1890 & 1907 Oklahoma Territorial Census at Ancestry.

In 1907, a census of Oklahoma Territory and Indian Territory was taken in preparation for the proposed statehood of Oklahoma. The only surviving schedules are for Seminole County. See 1890 & 1907 Oklahoma Territorial Census at Ancestry.

Federal Oklahoma Census Records are available to the public for the following census years; 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

Soundex code indexes for Federal Oklahoma census records are available on microfilm for census years 1900, 1910, & 1920.

1890 Federal Oklahoma Census Records were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules for Oklahoma survived the fire and may prove helpful as a census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

1890 Oklahoma City Directories may prove to be helpful in this time period.

Oklahoma

(Territory 1890.  Statehood 1907.)

Oklahoma lands became part of the Indiana Territory in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase.  In 1812 it was included with the Missouri Territory and by 1819 became part of the Arkansas Territory.  Oklahoma was known for many years as I.T. (Indian Territory).  The "great land runs" of 1891, 1893, and 1901 occurred when Indian lands were opened up to white settlers.  People poured into the state with the great promise of land.
