Ohio Census NotesIn 1790, Ohio was still in what was known as Northwest Territory. 1790 census enumerators did not enter this hostile territory to take the census so there is not a 1790 Federal census for the area that was to become Ohio Territory in 1799. 1800 & 1810 Federal censuses were taken in Ohio but the only surviving fragments are for Washington County, OH. What exists of these early Ohio census records are included in the 1790-1890 Ohio Census Collection at Ancestry. Federal Ohio census records are available to the public for census years 1800 (Washington County only), 1810 (Washington County only), 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Ohio Federal Census Records were destroyed by a fire in the Commerce Department Building in January 1921. Small fragments of Hamilton and Clinton Counties survived the fire along with the 1890 Union Veterans and Widows Schedules which are often used as a census substitute. See 1890 US Federal Census Fragments & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal Ohio census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920. Ohio State census records - Many states took their own census enumerations apart from the standard Federal censuses. Unfortunately, there are not any Ohio state census records known to exist.
