North Dakota Census Notes: 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1885 Territorial Census Records schedules exist for Dakota Territory which then included all counties in what is now known as South and North Dakota. North Dakota State Census Records are available for census years: 1885 (partial), 1915 and 1925. Federal North Dakota Census Records exist and are available to the public for census years: 1860 Dakota Territory, 1870 Dakota Territory, 1880 Dakota Territory, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal North Dakota census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, and 1920. 1890 North Dakota Federal Census schedules were completely destroyed by fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules for North Dakota did survive the fire and can prove helpful as a census substitute. North Dakota (Territory 1861. Statehood 1889.) The Dakotas were part of the Louisiana Purchase. Prior to 1820, Dacotah was part of Missouri Territory. At different points in time, the western half was attached to Nebraska Territory, while the eastern half was included in Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin Territories. The area became known as Dakota Territory in 1861. In 1863, the Homestead Act was passed and settlers flooded into the territory. Dakota Territory was split into North and South Dakota in 1887.
