North Carolina Census Notes:

Early North Carolina census records which survived:

  • 1775 for Pitt County only.

  • 1784 List of Inhabitants exists for some NC counties.

1784-1787 State Census of North CarolinaThis book lists over 14,000 household heads with an enumeration of those in each household by age, sex and race.

Federal North Carolina Census Records are available to the public  for census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930.

1890 North Carolina Federal Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 fire but small fragments survived for South Point and River Bend Townships in Gaston County AND Township No. 2 in Cleveland County.  

1890 North Carolina Federal Veterans and Widows Schedules did survive and are often used as a census substitute.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal North Dakota census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

When researching Archdale, Bath, Beaufort and Craven Counties, study all 4 as these areas changed names several times during the very early years.
