North Carolina Census Notes

Known Early North Carolina census records which survived include a 1775 census for Pitt County only and a 1784 list of inhabitants for some North Carolina counties. See 1784-1787 North Carolina State Census at Ancestry

1784-1787 State Census of North CarolinaThis book lists over 14,000 household heads with an enumeration of those in each household by age, sex and race.

Federal North Carolina Census Records are available to the public. The first census enumeration was in 1790 and a census was taken every 10 years thereafter. The census years include: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 North Carolina Federal Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire. Small fragments of the 1890 NC census did survive this fire for River Bend and South Point Townships in Gaston County AND Township Number 2 in Cleveland County. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census.

1890 North Carolina Federal Veterans and Widows Schedules did survive the fire and may be used as a census substitute. See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Federal North Dakota census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

Special Note: When researching in Archdale, Bath, Beaufort and Craven Counties, study all 4 as these areas changed names several times during the very early years.

Information regarding genealogy research at the North Carolina State Archives can be found online at: Guide for NC Genealogy in the NC State Archives.
