Newfoundland Census Notes
Censuses were taken in Newfoundland in the years:1836, 1845, 1857, 1869, 1884, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1935, 1945.
All survive with the exception of 1911 of which only fragments remain. Census returns are maintained by the
Newfoundland & Labrador Provincial Archives.
Newfoundland became part of Canada in
1949 and censuses were taken in 1951, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001. Access to those census records is restricted for 100 years due to Canadian policy.
