New Jersey Census Notes
New Jersey Federal census records are available for
to the public for the following census years: 1790, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930.
Most of the 1800, 1810 and 1820 New Jersey Federal census
schedules were lost. All that survived are census schedules for
1800 Cumberland County and 1820 Roxbury & Morris Counties. See
1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
1890 Federal New Jersey Census Records burned in a 1921 warehouse fire.
What survived for NJ are remnants of schedules for Jersey City in Hudson County. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census,
Bridging the 1890 Census Gap.
The NJ 1890 Veterans and Widows schedules did survive the fire and can provide somewhat of a census substitute for this time period.
See 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry.

New Jersey Federal census records exist for census years 1880, 1900, and 1920.
New Jersey State Census Records
exist for years 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905 and 1915. Not
all records for each year are complete. The 1885 and 1895 state
census years are especially helpful in place of the lost 1890 Federal
census records. Don't forget these NJ state census records in your
research. See
1895 State Census Records for NJ at Ancestry.
New Jersey Tax Records are a helpful tool in genealogy research as there are many lists in existence between 1772-1832.
These early tax records are indexed in the following collection.
