American Italian Heritage Museum

Historic Cherry Hill

Built in 1787 for the Philip Rensselaer family, the house has been open as a museum since 1964.  The museum holds over 70,000 items, decorative arts, furnishings, and documents related to the family who lived there between 1787 and 1963.  Located at 523 1/2 South Pearl Street in Albany, NY.

Irish American Heritage Museum

New Netherland Museum

Half Moon

The Half Moon is a full-scale, operating replica of the Dutch ship of exploration that Henry Hudson sailed in 1609.  The ship features a traveling living history museum focused on the settlement of the Dutch colony called New Netherland in the New World.  Visitors will learn about life in New Netherland during the 17th century.  The ship travels the Hudson River, the Delaware River and Bay and the Connecticut River but spends much time in the historic waters of New Netherland.

New York State Capitol Tour

The New York State Capitol building has served the state of New York since the 1880s  The beautiful 19th century architecture was 25 years in the making.  Tours of the NY State Capitol are available.  Tours begin at the Plaza Visitor Center / Gift Shop on the North Concourse.  Call 518-474-2418.

New York Sate Executive Mansion Tours

The historic house has been the home of New York's governors since 1875.  Tours are available by reservation.  Located at 138 Eagle Street in Albany, NY.

The museum explores New York State's natural and cultural diversity, past and present.  Located in the Cultural Education Center at 260 Madison Avenue in Albany, NY.

Pruyn House

Pruyn House is beautifully restored home on 5 1/2 acres in the hamlet of Newtonville, Town of Colonie.  Built between 1825 and 1830, the house was home to the Casparus Pruyn family.  The Pruyn House features a complex of historical structures which have been moved the area.  They include the Buhrmaster Barn, the Verdoy Schoolhouse, a smokehouse, woodshed, a carriage house and others.  Collections of historical artifacts and antique items are housed inside the buildings.  Located at 207 Old Niskayauna Road in Latham, NY.

Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site

Built 1763 and overlooking the Hudson River, the historic Georgian house was home to Philip J. Schuyler, the renowned Revolutionary War general and US Senator.  Today, visitors to the site can enjoy a guided tour of the mansion and an orientation exhibition in the Visitor Center.  Located at 32 Catherine Street in Albany, NY.

Shaker Heritage Society of Albany, NY

The Shaker Heritage Society, features a 770 acre Historic District including 9 historical Shaker buildings, fields, gardens, an orchard, the Ann Lee Pond Nature Preserve and the Shaker Cemetery.  Located at 25 Meeting House Road in Albany, NY.

Ten Broeck Mansion

Built 1797-1798, the historic mansion is operated by the Albany County Historical Association.  Focus is on the rich history of Albany County through exhibits, lectures, concerts, tours and an annual Living History Day in May.  Located at 9 Ten Broeck Place in Albany, NY.

Throop Pharmacy Museum

Housed in the main foyer of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Science's O'Brien Building, the museum provides a glimpse into the past of Pharmacy.  The historic Throop Drug Store was established in 1800.

USS Slater

The USS Slater is an historical Destroyer Escort from WWII.  Fully restored, the ship is moored on the Hudson River and features guided tours seasonally.  Located at Broadway and Quay in Albany, NY.

Call Homestead Museum

Pioneer Oil Museum of New York

Richburg-Wirt Historical Society Museum

Housed inside the 150 year old former Seventh Day Baptist Church, the museum is filled with historical items and memorabilia from the past of the Richburg, NY area.  Located at 243 Main Street in Richburg, NY.

Rushford Museum

Housed in the old Town Hall and Fire Department building, the Rushford Museum features exhibits related to the history of Rushford.  Additional historical structures have been added to the Rushford Historical Society's holdings including a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop and and the Grange building.  Located at 8982 Main Street in Rushford, NY.

The Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Art

The museum features almost 8000 ceramic and glass objects, ranging from small pottery shards of ancient civilizations to contemporary sculpture and installation pieces to advanced ceramics reflecting the cutting edge of ceramic technology.  Located at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in Binns-Merrill Hall.

Town of Hume Museum

The museum features historical artifacts, documents, photographs and other items related to the history of Hume, New York.  Housed in the Lodge Hall in the hamlet of Hume at the corner of Claybed and School Streets.

Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

City Island Nautical Museum

The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage

The small farmhouse was built in 1812 and was home to Edgar Allan Poe during the last years of his life.  The cottage has been restored and features authentic period furnishings.  Visitors will learn about the life & times of Edgar Allan Poe at Poe Cottage.  Located at 2640 Grand Concourse in Fordham, Bronx, NY.

Hall of Fame for Great Americans

Maritime Industry Museum

The museum offers one of the largest collections of maritime industry materials in the nation is on display in chronological order.  Includes Merchant Marine and the Port of New York history.  Located at Fort Schuyler at 6 Pennyfield Avenue in Bronx, NY.

Museum of Bronx History at Valentine-Varian House

Built in 1758, the Isaac Valentine home is a four-level fieldstone farmhouse.  The house was later owned by the Varian family.  Today, the house has been restored and opened to the public as the Museum of Bronx History.  The lower level of the house contains 3 galleries of exhibits related to local history.  Located at 3266 Bainbridge Avenue in Bronx, NY.

Van Cortlandt House

Known as the Frederick Van Cortlandt House, it is the oldest building in The Bronx.  Built in the Georgian style in 1748, the house was occupied by Van Cortlandts for 140 years.  During the Revolutionary War, its walls saw Washington, Rochambeau and Lafayette.  The house has been operated as a historic house museum since 1897.Located in Van Cortlandt Park at Broadway & W. 246th Street in Bronx, NY.

Dayton Historical Museum

The Dayton Historical Museum is operated by the Dayton Historical Society and housed inside the former St. Paul of the Cross Church.  The museum features many historical artifacts and antiques from the residents of the town along with a research library.  Located at 9561 Rt. 62 in Dayton, NY.

East Otto Historical Museum

Fannie E. Bartlett House

The Bartlett House is a Queen Anne-style house built in 1881 for Frank and Fannie Bartlett.  The beautiful house features Victorian furnishings, woodwork and unique design.  Located in the Carriage House on the property is the Olean Point Museum featuring exhibits and items related to the local business, culture and people of Olean Point.  Located at 302 Laurens Street in Olean, NY.

Miner's Cabin

The Miner's Cabin is home to the Ischua Valley Historical Society. The structure is actually a Queen Anne designed house built in 1895 for Simeon Robbins who had struck it rich in a Klondike gold mine..... hence the name Miner's Cabin.  Historical household items and furnishings fill the rooms and two research libraries are featured.  Located at 9 Pine Street in Franklinville, NY.

Howland Stone Store Museum

Built in 1837 by Slocum Howland of local field stones, the Howland Store houses a museum today.  The Howland family were actively involved in the abolition of slavery, education and the women's suffrage movement.  The museum holds exhibits and items related to that history.  Located at 2956 State Route 34B, Hamlet of Sherwood, NY.

Rural Life Museum

Dedicated to the teachers and students who attended one-room schools in rural America, the Rural Life Museum is housed inside the Franklin District #12 schoolhouse which was built in the 1840s.  The schoolhouse was moved to it's present location from Ledyard, NY.  The museum provides a hands-on experience where visitors may sit in the antique desks, write on slates and read the schoolbooks of yesteryear to experience what life was like in a one-room school.  Located at 920 NY-34B in King Ferry, NY.

Seward House Historic Museum

Operated by the Bemus Point Historical Society, the museum is housed in the old Village Hall and holds memorabilia, photographs and genealogical materials related to the history of Bemus Point and Chautauqua Lake.  Located at 13 Alburtus Avenue in Bemus Point, NY.

Darwin R. Barker Museum

The museum features rotating exhibits related to the local history of Fredonia, New York as well as an archives and research library.  Located at 7 Day Street in Fredonia, NY.

Dunkirk Historical Museum

The museum collects, preserves and exhibits artwork, photos, sculpture and historical objects related to the past of Dunkirk, New York.  Located at 513 Washington Avenue in Dunkirk, NY.

Dunkirk Lighthouse & Veteran's Park Museum

The Lighthouse was built in 1800 and has been restored.  Visitors may climb the spiral staircase to the top.  The museum features a collection of military artifacts on display in the lighthouse keepers house. Fenton History Center

Housed inside the 1863 Fenton Mansion, the museum offers documents, photographs, artifacts and exhibits related to the history of Jamestown and Chautauqua County, NY.  The mansion was home to NY Governor Reuben E. Fenton and has been beautifully preserved.  A genealogy library is located in the mansion which is located at 67 Washington Street in Jamestown, NY.

Harmony Historical Society Museum

The museum features an 1840s rural home with a carriage barn and 1890 schoolhouse.  Open by appointment.  An annual fall festival provides demonstrations of historical skills such as spinning, weaving, log hewing and fireplace cooking.  Located at 1943 Open Meadows Road in Ashville, NY.

Mayville Depot Museum and Chautauqua Township Historical Society Museum

The museum is housed in a historic train depot and operated by the Chautauqua Town Historical Society.  Located at 15 Water Street in Mayville, NY.

McClurg Museum

Housed inside the McClurg house built in 1818.  The 14 room Federal-style mansion is today the home to the Chautauqua County Historical Society.  The house is filled with historical artifacts and archival materials related to the early history and settlement of Chautauqua County, New York.  Guided tours are offered.  Located in Moore Park at NYS Rts 3894 & 20 in Westfield, NY.

Chemung County Museums Big Flats Historical Society Museum

The Big Flats Historical Society collects and preserves the history of the Big Flats area of New York.  Located at 258 Hibbard Road in Big Flats, NY.

The Center for Mark Twain Studies

The Center offers distinctive programs to foster ad support Mark Twain Scholarship and to strengthen the teaching of Mark Twain at all academic levels.  The Center is devoted to the preservation of Quarry Farm and the Mark Twain Study.  The exhibits feature photographs, stereoscopic views and memorabilia from the summers Mark Twain and his family spent in Elmira along with other artifacts from the life and times of mark Twain.  Located on the campus of Elmira College at One Park Place in Elmira, NY.

Horseheads Historical Society Museum

The primary focus of the Horseheads Historical Society Museum is to preserve the history of the Horseheads village.  The museum is housed inside the 1866 Pennsylvania Railroad depot which as been restored and filled with historical artifacts related to the rich heritage of Horseheads.  Located at 312 West Broad Street in Horseheads, NY.

Wings of Eagles Discovery Center

Features vintage airplanes, war planes and even offers vintage airplane rides.  Located at 17 Aviation Drive in Horseheads, NY.

The Zim House

Built in 1890, the Zim House is the family home of Eugene Zimmerman, known as Zim professionally.  Zim was a famous political caricaturist of teh late 1800s and early 1900s.  Today the house features examples of Zim's artistry.  Open by appointment only, the house is located at 601 Pine Street in Horseheads, NY.

Completed in 1874 of blue limestone rock, the lighthouse overlooks Lake Champlain.  The lighthouse served until 1930 when an automatic lighthouse was erected.  Bluff Point Lighthouse is the only lighthouse on Lake Champlain to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Located on the western side of Valcour Island in Lake Champlain.  Valcour Island is roughly a mile offshore from the town of Valcour and South Junction.

Heart's Delight Farm Heritage Exhibit

Heart's Delight Farm began in 1903 and grew from a farmhouse and a couple of barns on 144 acres into a model farm of 300 structures situated on 15,000 acres.  This exhibit portrays the development of Heart's Delight Farm and chronicles the youth and career of William Miner in the railroad industry.  Located at 1034 Miner Farm Road in Chazy, NY.

Kent-Delord House Museum

Operated by the Columbia County Historical Society, Livingston Manor is the centerpiece of the historic site.  Burned during the Revolutionary War, Livingston Manor was rebuilt 1779-1782 and was home to Robert R. Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse

Steepletop

Van Alen House

The Madam Brett Homestead

Constable Hall

This beautiful Georgian mansion was built in 1819 of native limestone by William Constable Jr.  Furnished in an outstanding elegance and luxury of the time, the home features may of the original furnishings today. It was at Constable hall in 1822 that Clement Clark Moore, a first cousin of William Constable, Jr.'s widow, wrote "A Visit from St. Nicholas," which is popularly known today as "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." It remained in the hands of the Constable family until 1947 when the late Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lewis and Mrs. H.D. Cornwall, all of Beaver Falls, bought the estate and restored the house and the lovely formal garden. They then presented the property to the Constable Hall Association, which today administers the property. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and appears in many guidebooks, including American Heritage Historic Houses in America.

Mennonite Heritage Farm

Tinker Homestead and Farm Museum

Occupied by 6 generations of the Tinker family, the cobblestone federal style house was completed in 1830.  The interior of the house has been restored to turn-of-the-century Victorian furnishings and tours of the homestead and farm gives visitors an understanding of how the Erie Canal forever changed farming in New York state.  Located at 1525 Calkins Road in Henrietta, NY.

The Arkell Museum

Fort Klock

1750 Fort Klock was the frontier home of Johannes Klock and his family.  The Fort was the site of two Revolutionary War battles.  Today, visitors may visit the fort, and hear the stories about this historic site from interpreters and learn what life was like in the early days of teh Mohawk Valley.  Re-enactments are performed seasonally.  Located on Route 5, 1 miles east of St. Johnsville, NY.

Fort Plain Museum & Historic Park

The Revolutionary War fort features both indoor and outdoor exhibits about Fort Plain's role in the Revolutionary War and the defense of the Mohawk Valley.  Located at 389 Canal Street in Fort Plain, NY.

National Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine

Focus is on the life of Kateri Tekawitha, a Mohawk-Algonquian woman, an early convert to Christianity.  The museum is housed in a 1782 Dutch barn and features a collection of native American artifacts.  Located at 3628 State Highway 5 in Fonda, NY.

Nellis Tavern

Established in 1747, the Nellis Tavern is operated by the Palatine Settlement Society.  Located at 7355 State Route 5 in St. Johnsville, NY.

The Noteworthy Indian Museum

Holding a collection of over 60,000 historical artifacts related to the history of the Mohawk Indians, the museum is located at the corner of Prospect and Church Streets in Amsterdam, NY.

Old Fort Johnson National Historical Landmark

Built in 1749 by Sir William Johnson, the superintendent of Indian Affairs, Old Fort Johnson today is a museum of history.  Located one mile west of Amsterdam at 2 Mergner road in Fort Johnson, NY.

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site

Devoted to the preservation and interpretation of the Erie Canal as one of the 19th century's greatest commerical and engineering projects, the Visitor Center features exhibits about the history of the Erie Canal.  Located at 129 Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter, NY.

Walter Elwood Museum

American Airpower Museum

The American Guitar Museum

Housed in a historic Colonial farmhouse, the museum features outstanding tools of old world luthiers, modern hi-tech equipment, blueprints, drawings, photos, one-of-a-kind musical instruments, transcriptions, books and memorabilia.  The museum is said to be a monument to some of the world's greatest guitar makers.  Located at 1810 New Hyde Park Road in New Hyde Park, NY.

American Merchant Marine Museum

Historic Roslyn  

[Roslyn History Timeline]

The village of Roslyn which got it's early beginnings as Hempstead Harbor on Long Island in what is known today as Nassau County.  Historical buildings have been preserved and restored.  Visitors will enjoy over 80 historical structures in a one square mile area of the Village.  The Van Nostrand-Starkins House is operated by the Roslyn Landmark Society as a museum where one can learn more about the early history of the area.  The house itself contains period furnishings and is located at 221 Main Street.

Museum of the Village of Rockville Centre - The Phillips House

The 1882 Captain Samuel F. Phillips house features Victorian furnishings and an archives where the heritage and history of Rockville Centre is being preserved.  Located at 28 Hempstead Avenue in Rockville Centre.

North Shore Historical Museum

Housed in the former Justices Court Building in Glen Cove, the North Shore Historical Museum features exhibits related to the history of the North shore, in particular the area once known as the "Gold Coast".  Located at 140 Glen Street in Glen Cove, NY.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Old Bethpage Village is a living history museum with 36 houses, barns and other historical structures dating from 1765 through 1865.  Visitors to the village will get a glimpse in the past as they stroll through the replicated village and view demonstrations of historic handicrafts and skills.  Located at 1303 Round Swamp Road in Old Bethpage, NY.

Polish American Museum

Raynham Hall Museum

The Colonial house was the home of Robert Townsend, George Washington's intelligence operative.  The house is open for tours and features historical furnishings, artifacts, artworks, household items and many other objects of interest.  Located at 20 West Main Street in Oyster Bay, NY.

Roslyn Landmark Society House Tour

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

Sagamore Hill was the former home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States.  Visitors to the historic site may explore the natural surroundings and learn about the legacy of one of America's most popular presidents.  Located at 20 Sagamore Hill Road in Oyster Bay, NY.

Sands-Willets House

This Long Island farmhouse was erected ca 1735 and features 11 furnished rooms, a museum and educational center.  Occupied by the Sands family an later by the Willets family, a prominent Quaker family, this home has seen a lot of history.  Located at 336 Port Washington Blvd. in Port Washington, NY.

Sea Cliff Village Museum

The museum is focused on the preservation of historical artifacts, documents, photos and other items related to the history of Sea Cliff Village.  Located at 95 Tenth Avenue in Sea Cliff, NY.

Seaford Historical Museum

Thomas Dodge House

Known as the oldest surviving house in the Port Washington area, the Thomas Dodge house was build ca 1721 and has been home to 7 generations of the Dodge family.  The house which has changed very little over the years, is being restored along with the grounds which include a garden, barn, chicken coop, and vintage outhouse.  Currently open by appointment only, it is located at 58 Harbor Road in Port Washington, NY.

Wantagh Museum

The Wantagh Museum is a complex of three structures including the 1885 Station, the Jamaica Railroad Car and the original 1907 Wantagh Post Office.  Visitors will see displays of turn-of-the-century photos depicting life Wantagh Avenue in Wantagh, NY.

 

New York County Museums African Burial Ground National Monument

This 6.6 acre burial ground  just outside the boundaries of the settlement of New Amsterdam, holds the graves of free and enslaved African Americans who were buried here from the 1690s to about 1794.

Mt. Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden

Niagara County Museums Benjamin Long Homestead

Constructed in 1829, the Long Homestead is a 10 room house built of hand hewn logs.  The house has been preserved and restored.  The Benjamin Long Homestead is operated by the Historical Society of the Tonawandas and is currently decorated with antique furnishings from the Empire and early Victorian periods refleccting the lifestyle of a well-to-do family of the area during the years 1810-1860.  Located at 24 East Niagara Street in Tonawanda, NY.

Das Haus Museum

The German Heritage museum is focused on the 800 Prussians who settled in the Niagara frontier in 1843.  It is housed in an original cabin of these early settlers in Niagara Falls.  Located at 2549 Niagara Road in Niagara Falls, NY.

Erie Canal Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is focused on the interpretation of the role that Lockport, New York played in the history of the Erie Canal.  Located at 24 Church Street in Lockport, NY.

7 buildings contain the manufacturing complex known as the Herschell Carousel Factory where carousels were made since 1916.  Located at 180 Thompson Street in North Tonawanda, NY.

Lewiston Museum

Originally built in 1835, St. Paul's Episcopal Church is the home to the Lewiston Museum.  Exhibits include the War of 1812, Freedom Crossing Underground Railroad, the 1720 French Settlement in Lewiston which was the beginning of Great Lakes commerce.  The museum has undergone extensive renovations and is open to visitors.  Located at 469 Plain Street in Lewiston, NY.

Van Horn Mansion

The Van Horn mansion was the first brick building built in the area almost 200 years ago.  Preserved and restored by the Newfane Historical Society, the mansion features 16 rooms and 5 bathrooms furnished with original and authentic clothing furniture and toys.  Tours are offered and the house looks much as it would have in the early 1800s.  Located at 2165 Lockport Olcott Road in Burt, NY.

The Wilson Historical Society Museum

Boonville Black River Canal Museum

Fort Stanwix National Monument

Fort Stanwix was built in 1758 to protect the Oneida Carry area from French attack during the French & Indian War.  During the American Revolution, the Fort was occupied by Americans and renamed Fort Schuyler.  Today, the Fort has been reconstructed and features historical artifacts, many of which were discovered through archaeological excavations at the site.  Located at 100 S. H. P. Sears Oil Museum

Cicero Historical Society Stone Arabia School House and 1900 Log House

The Cicero Historical Society operated three facilities including the Stone Arabia School House, the Log House and a Museum/Learning Center.  The Stone Arabia Schoolhouse was built in 1854 and operated for almost 100 years.  The Log House was built at the turn of the 19th century of hand-hewn logs.  The Museum & Learning Center features many historical artifacts, tools and farm equipment from the past of the Town of Cicero.  Located at 6453 State Route 31 in Cicero, NY.

Clay Historical Park and Cigarville Railroad Station Museum

The museum is a complex of buildings including the Cigarville Railroad Station, the 1840 Sellen-Weller Barn, a Visitors Center and a replica of the first log cabin built in Clay, New York, circa 1795.  Located at 4939 Rte, 31 in Clay, NY.

Camillus Erie Canal Park

The park features beautiful scenic wooded paths and walkways, tour boat rides along the historic Erie Canal, the Sims Store Museum, and a Steam Engine Exhibit.  Visitors can leant about the history of the Erie Canal and enjoy the park setting.  Located at 5750 Devoe Road in Camillus, NY.

The Liverpool Village Museum

Housed inside the 1857 Gleason Mansion, the museum features historical artifacts, photos and exhibits related to the people, places and history of Liverpool, New York.  Located at 314 Second Street in Liverpool, NY.

Manlius Historical Museum

Operated by the Manlius Historical Society, the museum features exhibits related to local history.  Permanent displays include a country kitchen, a general store, a school room, and a working blacksmith shop.  Located at the corner of Smith and Scoville Streets in Manlius, NY.

Martisco Station Museum

The former New York Central Railroad Station is listed on the National Register of historic Places.  Built in 1870, the two story Victorian brick train station today features many railroad exhibits of a historical nature.  Located at 5085 Matisco Road in Marcellus, NY.

Matilda Joslyn Gage Home

This historical home was home to Matilda Joslyn Gage, daughter of well-known abolitionist Dr. Hezekiah Joslyn.  The home was once a station for the Underground Railway. Matilda Joslyn Gage became involved in the woman's suffrage movement and she gave much of her life to the struggle for the complete liberation of women in the United States.  Her home is today a museum with each room dedicated to a different theme.  There is a Women's Rights room, the Underground Railroad Room, the Haudenosaunee Room, a room dedicated to Religious Freedom, a Local History Room, a research library and gift shop.  Located at 210 East Genesee Street in Fayetteville, NY.

The Museum of Automobile History

The museum is the largest Museum focused on the history of automobiles in the world.  Exhibits feature everything related to cars and the history of them.  Located at 321 North Clinton Street in Syracuse, NY.

Museum at the Creamery

The Skaneateles Creamery Company was opened in 1899 as a central place for the local farmers to sell milk and for residents to buy dairy products.  Today, the historic creamery is operated by the Skaneateles Historical Society as a museum featuring exhibits of antique transportation items, dairy farming and the history of the creamery.  Located at 28 Hannum Street in Skaneateles, NY.

The Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse

Focus is on the history of the Village of Baldwinsville and the Towns of Lysander and Van Buren.  The museum features exhibits and holds special events to educate the community about the unique history of Baldwinsville.  Located in McHarrie Park at 46 Canton Street in Baldwinsville, NY.

Onondaga Historical Association Museum

Salt Museum

The Steadman House

The Foster Cottage Museum

Ganondagan State Historic Site

Geneva History Museum

Devoted to the collection, preservation and exhibition of historical artifacts and materials related to the rich heritage of Geneva, New York.  The Geneva History Museum is housed inside the Prouty-Chew House located at 113 South Third Street in Geneva, IL.

Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum

Constructed in 1816, this 19th century Federal-style house has beautiful carved wood moldings, period furnishings and original antiques which were owned by the 4 generations of the Granger family who occupied the home.  In addition, lovely vintage carriage rides are offered.  Rentals are available for weddings and special events.  Located at 295 N. Howe House Museum

The Howe House Museum is operated by the Phelps Community Historical Society.  The house was built in 1869 and has a unique 2 story outhouse.  The museum feature exhibits of antique household items and farm equipment.  Located at 66 Main Street in Phelps, NY.

Ontario County Historical Museum

Sonnenburg Gardens & Mansion Historic State Park

Valentown Museum and Icabod Town Homestead

Operated by the Victor Historical Society, the museum is housed in the 1879 Valentown Hall.  The Hall was rescued from destruction by Sheldon Fisher in 1940 and has been restored and filled with antiques, artifacts and heirlooms of early settlers of the Victor, New York area.  Today, visitors will find a general store, meeting room, bakery, harness shop, cobbler's shop, music school, and display cases filled with a variety of items related to the history of Victor, NY.  Located at 7370 Valentown Square in Victor, NY.

 

Orange County Museums 1863 Schoolhouse

The Town of Deerpark Museum

[History]

The Huguenot Schoolhouse was built in 1863 of bricks made from local clay. Used as a schoolhouse until 1961, the school today has been restored and holds artifacts and exhibits related to the early history of Deerpark.  Located at 25 Grange Road in Huguenot, NY.

Bull Stone House

[History]

Known as the birthplace of Hamptonburgh, the Bull Stone House features a New World Dutch Barn and is the only example still standing in Orange County, New York.  Built in 1722 by William Bull and Sarah Wells, early settlers in Orange County, the living museum is open for tours.  Located at 183 County Route 51 in Campbell Hall, NY.

 

Brick House Museum

Built in 1768 by Nathaniel Hill, the Brick House has been occupied by seven generations of the Hill family.  The house contains original Chippendale furnishings.  Located at 850 Route 17K in Montgomery, NY.

Captain David Crawford House

[Early Newburgh History]

Built in 1830 for Captain David Crawford, a civic leader and maritime entrepreneur, the stately house is a neo-classical styled home on over 500 acres overlooking the Hudson River.  The beautifully restored house features exhibits and information about the life of the wealthy Crawford family and the history of Newburgh and the Hudson Valley along with beautiful antique furnishings.  Located at 189 Montgomery Street in Newburgh, NY.

Clove Furnace

Clove Furnace opened in 1854.  The furnace produced many tons of iron ore until it was shut down in 1885.  Today the former furnace serves as the headquarters for the Orange County Historical Society who features a museum explaining the ironmaking process and has displays related to the history of Orange County.  Located at 21 Clove Furnace Drive in Arden, NY.

Constitution Island

Walking tours of historic Constitution Island are offered upon reaching the island by boat from the US Military Academy at West Point's South Dock.  Visitors will experience the Warner House, Anna Warner's historic gardens, the Revolutionary War Redoubts and lean about the island's history from knowledgeable tour guides. 

Edmonston House

Edwin Welling Van Duzer Memorial House

Headquarters to the Historical Society of Middletown & Wallkill Precinct, the house is also operated as a museum.  Located at 25 East Avenue in Middletown, NY.

Eleazer Harding House

Built ca1790, the restored farmhouse is managed by the Mount Hope Historical Society.  The property features an historical herb garden, cooking hearth, exhibits and demonstrations of early pioneer skills with a newly restored 19th century barn.  Located at 183 Old Mountain Road in Otisville, NY.

Fort Decker Museum of History

The 1793 stone house is one of the most historic buildings in Port Jervis area.  Built by Revolutionary War patriot, Lt. Martinus Decker, the house today is operated by the Minisink Valley Historical Society as a local history museum.  Located at 127 West Main Street in Port Jervis, NY.

 

Fort Montgomery State Historic Site

The historic Fort Montgomery saw a Revolutionary War battle which was fought in 1777 for control of the Hudson River.  Visitors to the site will learn about this important military post in the site's museum through exhibits of original artifacts, weapons and battle information.  Remains of Fort Montgomery have been uncovered through archaeological digs.  Located at 690 Route 9W in Fort Montgomery, NY.

Gomez Mill House

[History of Gomez Mill House]

Said to be the oldest Jewish residence in North America, the house was built in 1714 by Luis Moses Gomez, a Sephardic Jew.Located at 11 Mill House Road in Marlboro, NY.

 

Hill-Hold Museum

The stone farmhouse was built in 1769.  Home to prosperous farmer, Thomas Bull and his family, the house contains original furnishings and provided a home for the Bull-Jackson family for over 200 years.  Visitors to the house are invited to tour the farm.  Located at 128 Route 416 in Campbell Hall, NY.

Jacob T. Walden House

Built in the early 1700s on the 1000 acre Gatehouse Patent, the house today is home to the Historical Society of Walden & the Wallkill Valley.  The house features exhibits related to the history of the area.  Located at 34 North Montgomery Street in Walden, NY.

Knox's Headquarters State Historic Site

The 1754 Georgian-styled house of John Ellison was the Revolutionary War Headquarters for General Henry Knox. Visitors to the site will learn about the Revolutionary War and how the Ellison family and other families of the mid-Hudson Valley lived 200 years ago.   Located at 289 Forge Hill Road in Vails Gate, NY.

Maybrook Railroad Museum

The museum honors the memory of the Maybrook railway yard through displays of photos and memorabilia.  Located at 111 Schipps Lane in Maybrook, NY.

Fort Brewerton and Oliver Stevens Blockhouse Museum & Historic Park

[History]

Fort Brewerton was built in 1759 as a point of defense along the Oneida River being the trail between the Great Lakes and Albany.  The Oliver Stevens Blockhouse is a replica of the first settlement in Brewerton.  Although Fort Brewerton is long gone, the original earthworks remain and the Blockhouse hold a museum detailing the history of Fort Brewerton and the Oliver Stevens family.  Located at 9 US Route 11 in Brewerton, NY.

Fort Ontario State Historic Site

Dating to the early 1840s, the star-shaped Fort Ontario is open to the public.  The current Fort Ontario is built on the ruins of three earlier forts dating as far back as the French and Indian War.  Visitors to the fort will learn about the the history of this Fort Ontario and the forts at this location before it.  Located at 1 East Fourth Street in Oswego, NY.

H. Lee White Maritime Museum

The Yager Museum of Art and Culture

Queens County Museums The Bowne House

Built around 1661, the Bowne House is the best-preserved example of Anglo-Dutch vernacular residential architecture in the country.  Known as the oldest house in Queens, it is still standing on the original site.  Today the house is being operated by the Bowne House Historical Society as a museum.  There are approximately 5000 objects that are original to the house and belonged to the Bowne family.  Located at 37-01 Bowne Street in Flushing, NY.

The Castle at Fort Totten

King Manor Museum

King Manor is operated as a historic house museum by the King Manor Association of L.I., Inc.  Focus is on the preservation and interpretation of the home and legacy of Rufus King.  Located inside King Park on Jamaica Avenue in Jamaica, NY.

Kingsland Homestead

Built between 1774 and 1785, the Kingsland Homestead is home to the Queens Historical Society.  The historic house museum is used for exhibitions, a meeting place as as an archive and library.  Located inside Weeping Beech Park at 143-35 37th Avenue in Flushing, NY.

Lewis H. Latimer House

Formerly the home to Lewis Howard Latimer, African-American inventor and electrical pioneer, the house is a modest Queen Anne styled wood frame residence built in the late 1880s.  Today, the house is a museum featuring exhibits about Latimer's and other African-Americans' contributions to science, technology and American life.  Located at 34-41 137th Street in Flushing, NY.

Louis Armstrong House Museum

The Louis Armstrong House Museum is a National Historic Landmark.  The museum is devoted to the collection, preservation and exhibition of materials related to the life and career of Louis Armstrong.  Located at 34-56 107th Street in Corona, NY.

The New York Mets Hall of Fame

The museum features artifacts from the New York Mets baseball team and features 1969 & 1986 World Series Trophies as well as plaques for each member of the Mets Hall of Fame  Located in the New York Mets Citi Field on the first base side and adjacent to the Jackie Robinson Rotunda.

Queens County Farm Museum

Dating back to 1697, the Queens County Farm Museum occupies New York City's largest remaining tract of undisturbed farmland.  The 47 acre parcel is the longest continuously farmed site in New York State.  The site includes historic farm buildings, greenhouses, livestock, farm implements and machinery, planting fields, an orchard and herb garden.  Located at 75-50 Little Neck Parkway in floral Park, NY.

The Vander Ende Onderdonk House

Located in Ridgewood, NY, the house is the oldest Dutch Colonial stone house standing in New York City.  The house serves a museum housing exhibits related to the history, arts and culture of the house and surrounding area as well as the archaeology of the Onderdonk site.  Guided tours are offered at special times of the year and the Greater Ridgewood Historical Society maintains a history and genealogy research library.  The house is located at 1820 Flushing Avenue in Ridgewood, NY.

Voelker Orth Museum

The 1891 house was purchased in 1899 by German immigrant, Conrad Voelcker and remained in the same family until Elisabetha Orth left the estate to establish the museum.  The museum features tours, exhibits, performances, talks, workshops and educational programs.  Located at 149-19 38th Avenue in Flushing, NY.

Burden Iron Works Museum

Housed inside the former office of one of the most important firms in the history of Iron and Steel, the museum educates visitors about the history of iron working in South Troy.  Located at 1 East Industrial Parkway in Troy, NY

Crailo State Historic Site

Focused on the Colonial Dutch history in Rensselaerswyck, the Crailo farm was built in the early 18th century by Hendrick Van Rensselaer.  Today, the museum tells the story of the early Dutch inhabitants of the upper Hudson Valley with exhibits and archeological finds from the Albany Fort Orange excavations, special programs and guided tours of the museum.  Located at 9 1/2 Riverside Avenue in Rensselaer, NY.

Hart-Cluett House

Knickerbocker Mansion

Alice Austen House

Billiou-Stillwell-Perine House

Built around the time of Staten Island's first settlement in 1661, the house is built of rough fieldstone in the Dutch Colonial style.  The house is maintained by the Staten Island Historical Society.  Located inside Historic Richmond Town at 1476 Richmond Road in Dongan Hills.

The Conference House

Built around 1680 by English immigrant Captain Christopher Billopp, the Conference House takes it's place in American history as the site of a 1776 peace conference.  Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Lord Howe are some of those who attended the peace conference.  The house has been restored and has been used as a house museum since 1937.  The focus of the museum is to preserve, protect and maintain the historic Conference House and educates visitors about it's significance in American history.  Located at 7455 Hylan Blvd. in Staten Island, NY.

Fort Wadsworth

Fort Wadsworth is one of the oldest military sites in the United States.  Once standing guard over the Narrows, today it is managed by the National Parks Service and is part of the Gateway National Recreational Area.  Informative tours are led by park rangers as visitors explore the same stronghold manned by soldiers of long ago.  Located at 210 New York Avenue in Staten Island, NY.

Garibaldi-Meucci Museum

Camp Shanks WWII Museum

The DeWint House

The Jacob Blauvelt House

Little Red Schoolhouse Museum

Built in 1890, the Little Red Schoolhouse was used for over 80 years.  Today, the one-room schoolhouse is a museum operated by the east Ramapo Central School District.  Located at 50 Schoolhouse Road in Chestnut Ridge, NY.

Brookside Museum

Charlton Historical Society Museum

Grant Cottage State Historic Site

Located in the Adirondacks, this cottage was where General Ulysses S. Grant died of throat cancer on July 23, 1885.  Today the cottage and furnishings remain much the same as it was during the Grant family's stay.  Guests may tour the cottage.  Located in Wilton, NY.

The National Bottle Museum

The National Bottle Museum is primarily focused on the history of the bottle making industry in the United States.  Exhibits include thousands of early glass bottles which were created by workers and glassblowers along with demonstrations of glassworking.  Located at 76 Milton Avenue in Ballston, NY.

The New York State Military Museum

The museum is devoted to the preservation, interpretation and dissemination of the history and records of the military forces and veterans of the state of New York.  Over 10,000 artifacts dating as far back as the Revolutionary War are featured on display.  A library and archives holds books, photographs, scrapbooks, letters, maps and other historical documents for the interested researcher.  Located at 61 Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Schenectady County Museums Empire State Aerosciences Museum

Mabee Farm Historic Site

Schenectady County Historical Museum

Schoharie County Museums The Christopher Best Medical Exhibit 

The Best House was home and Doctor's Office to two generations of country doctors, Dr. Christopher S. Best and his son Dr. Duncan L. Blenheim-Gilboa Vistors Center

The Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center is housed inside a 19th century dairy barn, exhibits demonstrate how our power is made and used.  Next door, is Lansing Manor, an early American country estate built in 1819 by John Lansing.  The house is filled with authentic furnishings from the first half of the 19th century.  Located at 1378 State Route 30 in North Blenheim, NY.

Caverns Creek Grist Mill Museum

Geneva History Museum

Bement-Billings Farmstead Museum

Rogers Island Visitors Center

Slate Valley Museum

  4. Alling Coverlet Museum features the largest collection of American hand woven coverlets in the United States.  Located at 122 William Street in Palmyra, NY.

Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse

The one room schoolhouse was built in the 1820s of fieldstones.  It is the oldest cobblestone schoolhouse in North America.  Operated by the Butler Historical Preservation Society, it is located on the corner of Van Vleck Road and Route 89 in Butler, NY.

Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum

The historical lighthouse was completed in 1871 and features a museum inside with emphasis on the local maritime History of Sodus Bay.  Located at 4606 North Ontario Street in Sodus Point, NY.

Walworth Historical Society and Museum

The museum features historical artifacts, documents and other items related to the history of Walworth.  Located at 2257 Academy Street in Walworth, NY.

Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society Museum

The Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society features a museum of historical artifacts and items related to the early history of Pultneyville, East Williamson and Williamson.  An Archive for researchers is also available on the premises.  Located on Mill Street in Williamson, NY.

 

Westchester County Museums The Bedford Museum

Housed inside the 1787 Bedford Court House, the museum features mock trails in the beautifully restored court room.  On the second floor, exhibits of historic artifacts from Bedford's past include a spinning wheel, farming implements, household items, toys and other memorabilia.  Two original jail cells remain in the Court House.  They are the oldest jail cells in Westchester County.  Located on the Village Green at 615 Old Post Road in Bedford, NY.

Elijah Miller House

The historic farmhouse was used in 1776 during the Revolutionary War Battle of White Plains by General George Washington.  The house is currently closed because it is in need of repairs.  Located at 140 Virginia Road in White Plains, NY.

Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden

The Hammond Museum features exhibits of East Asian art and culture as well as the Japanese Stroll Garden.  Located at 28 Deveau Road in North Salem, NY.

Historical Site Tour of North Castle

The Historical Society, Inc. of Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown

Focused on the history of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, the museum provides exhibits of fine arts, decorative arts, archeological objects, research materials and other historic artifacts related to the rich heritage of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.  Located at One Grove Street in Tarrytown, NY.

The Horace Greeley House Museum

The Horace Greeley House was built in the early 1850s and used by the Horace Greeley (19th century newspaper editor and presidential candidate) as a summer home.  Today, the house is being operated as a museum by the New Castle Historical Society.  The house features historic period furnishings with exhibits about the history of the people and places in the Town of New Castle.  Located at 100 King Street in Chappaqua, NY.

Jay Heritage Center

The house is the childhood home of John Jay, a Founding Father and leader.  The house is an 1838 Greek Revival mansion.  Visitors will learn about the life and times of John Jay and all the people who lived and visited here.  The house is one of the oldest National Historic Landmark structures in New York State.  Located inside Westchester County Park at 210 Boston Post Road in Rye, NY.

John Jay Homestead State Historic Site

Visitors will learn about the farm life in the 19th century as they explore the 62 acre site which includes the John Jay Homestead, historic outbuildings, formal gardens, fields, a pond and wooded trails.  The Homestead was the retirement home for John Jay, Founding Father and Statesman.  Located at 400 Jay Street in Katonah, NY.

Kykuit, The Rockefeller Estate

The beautiful historic mansion was home to 4 generations of the Rockefeller family beginning with John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil.  The six story house was built of stone and features gorgeous terraced gardens containing a beautiful collection of 20th century sculptures.  Visitors will view art galleries, a collection of classic automobiles and horse-drawn carriages.  Tours begin at the Visitor Center at Philipsburg Manor located on Route 9 in the village of Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Lincoln Depot Museum

Lincoln Depot is where Abraham Lincoln stopped to greet New Yorkers during his inaugural train ride on February 19, 1861.  The museum celebrates Lincoln's relationship to New York and New Yorkers before and during the Civil War.  Located at 10 South Water Street in Peekskill, NY.

Lyndhurst

The Gothic Revival mansion was built in 1838.  Famous occupants include NYC Mayor William Paulding, George Merritt, and railroad tycoon Jay Gould.  Overlooking the Hudson River, the sweeping grounds are magnificent.  Guided tours are offered and events such as weddings may be scheduled.  Located at 635 South Broadway in Tarrytown, NY.

Muscoot Farm

The purpose of the Muscoot Farm is to preserve and interpret the agricultural, cultural and natural heritage of a Westchester County farm, circa 1880-1930.  The historic working dairy farm is located at 51 Route 100 in Katonah, NY.

Museum of the Early American Circus

Operated by the Somers Historical Society, the museum features the local history of Somers area of New York and circus history. A research library is also on the premises.  Housed inside the historic Elephant Hotel located at 335 Route 202 in Somers, NY.

The Ossining Historical Society Museum

The Peekskill Museum is housed inside the 1878 Herrick family home.  The museum is filled with historical objects, documents and other items related to the history of the Peekskill area.  Located at 124 Union Avenue in Peekskill, NY.

Philipsburg Manor

Philipsburg Manor was once a thriving farming, milling, and trading center owned by the Philipses, a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants.  Step back in time to the 18th century, where tenant farmers lived and worked and the Philips used slaves to operate the complex.  Today, visitors can visit the working gristmill, tour the 300 year old manor house and see the activity center where demonstrations of early skills and crafts are performed.  Other structures on the property include a reconstructed tenant farm house, an 18th century barn and don't forget the slave garden.  Located at 381 North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site

Philipse Manor Hall is a state historic site and museum.  The oldest portion of the Philipse Manor Hall is believed to date back to the 1680s, making it the oldest building in Westchester county.   Tours of the house are offered and open to the public for research queries.  Located at 29 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers, NY.

Saint Paul's Church National Historic Site

The historic site features an 18th century church, a historic cemetery with headstones dating back to 1704 and the remnant of a Village Green that was the site of the Election of 1733.  Visitors will learn about the history of the Colonial society and the American Revolution.  Interpretive tours are offered and visitors will learn the fascinating history of the 240 year old church.  Located at 897 S. Sherwood House Vineyards

Sherwood House was built in 1860.  Today it is surrounded by vineyards.  Located at 1291 Main Road in Jamesport, NY.

Square House Museum

The house, once known as Stage House was originally owned by yeoman farmer Jacob Pierce. Built between 1675 and 1683, the house has known 21 owners in total and was at one time operated as an inn and tavern. Today, the house has been restored and turned into a museum with exhibits related to the history of Rye. Self guided tours daily and docent guided tours are available on request.  Call 914.967.7588. Thomas Paine Cottage Museum

The Thomas Paine Cottage is the last building in North America that was owned by Founding Father Thomas Paine.  The house is operated as a museum today and features artifacts once owned by Thomas Paine.  The Cottage features period furnishings and provides exhibits related to local history and the Huguenot settlement of New Rochelle.  Also on the premises is the Sophia Brewster one-room schoolhouse, the oldest free standing school in New Rochelle.  Located at 20 Sicard Avenue in New Rochelle, NY.

Timothy Knapp House - Library & Archives.

Timothy Knapp (prominent member of the Rye community) built the oldest part of this house between 1667 and 1680.  The Knapp family occupied the house until 1746 at which time the Halsted family bought the home and made additions, occupying the home for over 150 years. In 1906 the home was purchased by Simeon Ford and remained in the Ford family until 1992 when it was purchased by the Rye Historical Society and restored. Now home to the Rye Historical Society, visitors can take a step back into the history of Rye.  A research library containing historical documents is located in the archives at Knapp House.  Located at 265 Rye Beach Avenue and Milton Road in Rye, NY.

Van Cortlandt Manor

The complex features the stone manor house, a brick ferry house, and the heritage gardens along the Croton River.  Visitors to the site will experience the domestic life of a patriot family, the Van Cortlandts, one of New York's most prominent families, living in the years immediately following the American Revolution.  Furnishings are from the colonial and federal periods.  The ferry house was built prior to 1750 and served as a rural tavern offering food, drink and lodging to travelers along the Albany Post Road.  Located at 525 S. Riverside, Croton-on-Hudson, NY.

Washington Irving's Sunnyside

Famed American author, Washington Irving's home has been restored and is filled with his possessions, his writing desk and books.  Costumed docent guides provide tours of the house and grounds.  Located at 3 West Sunnyside Lane in Irvington, NY.

Westchester County Veterans Museum

The museum is devoted to the residents of Westchester who served their country from the Revolutionary War to the present time.  Located inside Lasdon Park at 2610 Amawalk Road in Katonah, NY.

The Yorktown Museum

The Yorktown Museum provides a glimpse into the past as visitors visit an 18th century home, an early Mohegan Indian settlement and the Old Put Railroad.  The museum also provides a Library and Research Room for those interested in local area history and genealogy.  Located in the Yorktown Community & Cultural Center - Top Floor at 1974 Commerce Street in Yorktown Heights, NY.

 

Wyoming County Museums Castile Historical Museum

The Museum is filled with artifacts, records and pictures covering more than a century of Castile history.  Located at 17 Park Road East in Castile, NY.

Gates House Museum

Operated by the Warsaw Historical Society, the museum is located at 15 Perry Avenue in Warsaw, NY.

The Gibby House

The historic Gibby House is a Queen Anne styled house which serves as a home for the Arcade Historical Society.  The house features exhibits of objects, records and other artifacts that illustrate the history of the Town of Arcade and the surrounding area.  Located at 331 West Main Street in Arcade, NY.

Letchworth State Park

Often heralded as "The Grand Canyon of the East", the park features 3 beautiful waterfalls created by the Genesee River as it roars over 600 foot cliffs.  The historic Glen Iris Inn has been restored and is available for overnight stays and meals while Wolcott Farms offers horseback riding, carriage and sleigh rides.  Located in Castile, NY at Exit 7 on Interstate 390.

 

Yates County Museums Agricultural Memories Museum

The museum is focused on the collection and preservation of historical farm equipment & transportation.  Located at 1110 Townline Road in Penn Yan, NY.

Finger Lakes Boating Museum

The museum is devoted to the education and preservation of the boating activities and boat building history in the Finger Lakes area of New York.  Located at 8231 Pleasant Valley Road in Hammondsport, NY.

L. Caroline Underwood Museum

The museum is devoted to sharing history of the area along with the history of L. Caroline Underwood, teacher.  A research room is located inside the museum at 107 Chapel Street in Penn Yan, NY.

Oliver House Museum

The home built in 1852 by Dr. Andrew Oliver, is an 18 room mansion in the Italianate style.  Serving as a museum, the house features period furnishings along with collections of the historical society.  200 Main Street, Penn Yan, NY.
