New Mexico Census NotesNew Mexico Territory was established in 1850. Colorado and Arizona were included in New Mexico Territory at that time. Colorado Territory was separated from New Mexico Territory in 1861 and Arizona Territory in 1863. These factors can come into play when you are researching census records for ancestors during this time period in NM, CO and AZ. See Arizona & New Mexico Territories Census, Late 1800s at Ancestry. Federal New Mexico census records are available to the public for census years 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1885, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. The 1890 Federal New Mexico Census schedules were lost in a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Veterans and Widows schedules did survive. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for New Mexico Federal census records were created by NARA and are available on microfilm for census years 1880, 1900, and 1920.
