New Jersey Census Notes

New Jersey Federal census records are available for census years: 1790, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920, & 1930.

The 1800, 1810 and 1820 New Jersey Federal census schedules were completely lost with the exception of 1800 Cumberland County and an 1820 census for Roxbury, Morris County..

1890 New Jersey Federal Census Records burned in a 1921 fire, with the exception of small remnants of Jersey City of Hudson County.

The NJ 1890 Veterans and Widows schedules did survive the fire and can provide somewhat of a census substitute for this time period.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for New Jersey Federal census records exist for census years 1880, 1900, and 1920.

New Jersey State Census Records exist for years 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905 and 1915.  Not all records for each year are complete.  The 1885 and 1895 state census years are especially helpful in place of the lost 1890 Federal census records.  Don't forget these NJ state census records in your research.

New Jersey Tax Records are a helpful tool in genealogy research as there are many lists in existence between 1772-1832.
