Nebraska Census Notes
Nebraska Territorial Census Records
- Territorial censuses were taken for the years 1854, 1855, 1856 and 1860
in Nebraska.
See 1854-1870 Nebraska Census at Ancestry.
Federal Nebraska Census Records are available
for the following years: 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

Soundex code
(phonetic indexes) for Nebraska Federal census records
are available to the public for the census years: 1880, 1900,
and 1920.
The 1885 Special Federal Agricultural Census
is an excellent and little used resource. I have copies of some of
these. They tell what kind of livestock, how many, if they sold
butter, eggs, etc...provides a very interesting look into your family
history.
See 1885 Special Nebraska State Census at Ancestry.
1890 Nebraska Federal Census Records were destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Nebraska Veterans and Widows schedules did survive the fire and are often used as a census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census.
Nebraska State Census Records
were enumerated every year between 1869 and 1885. Only a small number of those schedules have been found and in fact, some may still be buried in storage rooms of old courthouses.
