Montana Census NotesThe first Federal Montana Census Records were enumerated in 1870 and a census was taken every ten years thereafter: 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Federal Montana Census Records were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire, however, the 1890 Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive and they are often used as a census substitute. See Bridging the 1890 Census Gap & 1890 Veterans Schedules at Ancestry. Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for the Montana Federal censuses are available for the following census years: 1880, 1900, and 1920. There are not very many Montana census records available online. This is partly due to the fact that statehood was not until 1889. Another significant factor is there were not many Montana counties formed until the late 1900s. It is important to look at the county formation dates so you will know where to search for Montana census records during earlier time periods. Montana State Census Records? Although some states took their own censuses, there are not any known existing Montana state census records. Note when searching the 1910 census for future residents of Wibaux County: Most of the future Wibaux County residents were enumerated in the Wibaux School District of Dawson County but there are some in Southern Wibaux County who were enumerated in the Carlyle School District of Custer County. Learn what questions were asked in each census year and where to find census records online. This section of Census Finder covers each census year from 1790-1940 and will give you clues and tips to help you learn to locate your ancestors quickly in census records.
