Mississippi Census Notes:

Federal Mississippi census records are available to the public for census years: 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

1890 MS Census Schedules were completely destroyed by fire in 1921, however,  the Veterans and Widows Census did survive and is often used as an aid for searching in that census year.

Soundex code (phonetic indexes) for Mississippi Federal census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880,  1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

Mississippi school census records were taken frequently.  The Mississippi Department of History and Archives has a list of published MS school censuses.

Mississippi state census records were enumerated for several years.  Genealogically speaking, these will hold the name of the head of household and number statistics for other members in the household.  They can prove helpful for filling in gaps.  Known MS state census years are 1801, 1805, 1808, 1810, 1816, 1818, 1820, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825, 1830, 1833, 1837, 1840, 1841, 1845, 1850, 1853, 1860, and 1866.  All of these are incomplete sets of data.  Some of these are online at the Mississippi USGenWeb Census ProjectThe others can be viewed on microfilm or published in book form at the Mississippi Archives.
