Michigan Census Notes

Between 1763 and 1783, Michigan was part of Quebec Territory. Between 1787 and 1800, Michigan was considered to be a part of the Northwest Territory. Between 1800 and 1805, it was part of Ohio and Indian Territories. These facts can come into play when researching census records for Michigan ancestors.

Wisconsin was carved from Michigan Territory so when searching for ancestors from Wisconsin areas in early years, you will also need to consider searching in Michigan.

1810 Michigan Territorial Census Records are missing in entirety.

There is an 1827 Michigan Territorial Census. See 1827-1870 Michigan Census Records at Ancestry.

Federal Michigan Census Records are available to the public for the following census years: 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry.

Soundex Indexes for Federal Michigan census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920.

Federal 1890 Michigan Census Records were lost in a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Veterans and Widows Schedules did survive and is often used as a census substitute. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census.

Michigan State Census Records were enumerated every 10 years: 1854, 1864, 1874, 1884, 1894, & 1904.  Additional state census records were taken in some areas for 1837, 1845 and 1888. See 1894 Michigan State Census Records at Ancestry.

Michigan Native American Census Records See 1915 Census of the Scattered Bands of Potawatomies in Wisconsin & Michigan and 1836 Ottawa & Chippewa Census
