Michigan Census Notes:Between 1763 and 1783, Michigan was part of Quebec Territory. Between 1787 and 1800, Michigan was considered part of the Northwest Territory. Between 1800 and 1805, it was part of Ohio and Indian Territories. Wisconsin was carved from Michigan Territory so if searching early Wisconsin areas, you will also need to consider searching in Michigan. 1810 Territorial Census Records for Michigan are missing. Federal Census Records for Michigan are available to the public for census years: 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. Soundex Indexes for Federal Michigan census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920. Federal 1890 Michigan Census Records were lost in a 1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Veterans and Widows Schedules did survive and can be used as a census substitute in some cases. Michigan State Census Records were enumerated every 10 years: 1854, 1864, 1874, 1884, 1904. Additional state census records were taken in some areas for 1837, 1845 and 1888. Many of these are also on file at the county level with the county clerk of each respective county. Copies of most records before 1867 may be obtained from the County Clerk in the county where the event occurred.
