Massachusetts Census Notes:
Massachusetts is one of the easiest states to research family history because so many records have been kept since very early times. Most of those records have been published in written form for easy access by researchers, however it seems very little of these records can be found free online. Ancestry does offer a large collection of Massachusetts genealogy records online .
Federal Massachusetts Census Records are available to the public for census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. A portion of 1800 Suffolk County is missing.
1890
Federal Massachusetts census records were completely destroyed in a fire, however the 1890 Massachusetts Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive the fire and can provide a helpful census substitute.
Soundex Indexes for Massachusetts census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1920.
1855 & 1865 Massachusetts State Census records do exist. They can be ordered at Massachusetts Document Retrieval
for a fee.
