Massachusetts Census Notes
Massachusetts is one of the easiest states to research your family history because so many records have been kept since very early times. Most of
the early Massachusetts genealogical records have been published in written form for easy access by researchers, however it seems
that very few of these records can be found free online. More free
census records are being added all the time. Ancestry does offer a large collection of Massachusetts genealogy records online .
Federal Massachusetts Census Records
are available to the public for census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. A portion of
the 1800 Suffolk County census schedule is missing.
See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.
1890
Federal Massachusetts census records were completely destroyed in a
1921 warehouse fire, however the 1890 Massachusetts Veterans and Widows census schedules did survive the fire and can provide a helpful census substitute.

Soundex Indexes for Massachusetts census records
are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1920.
Although a Massachusetts State Census enumeration was taken ever 10
years from 1845-1945, the 1855 & 1865 Massachusetts State Census records
are the only state censuses for Massachusetts known to survive. See
1855 Massachusetts State Census and See
1865 Massachusetts State Census.
Copies of these MA state census records may be ordered at Massachusetts Document Retrieval
for a fee.
