Kansas Census Notes

Kansas Territorial censuses were taken each year from 1855-1859. See 1850-1890 Kansas Census at Ancestry as it contains Kansas Territorial and state census records.

Kansas State Census Records were taken 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925. Voters Lists for years 1855, 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859 may also prove helpful for locating early Kansas ancestors. See 1855-1925 Kansas State Census Collection at Ancestry to search all of these records.

Soundex code indexes for Federal Kansas census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920.

Federal Kansas census records are available to the public for census years: 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.  See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Federal Kansas census records (including the special Veterans and Widows schedules) were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census & Bridging the 1890 Census Gap
