 Kansas

(Territory 1854. Statehood 1861.)

The first settlement established in the territory where the state of Kansas is presently located was Fort Leavenworth.  Fort  Leavenworth, begun in 1827, was a popular stop for travelers who were moving across the western frontier.  Early settlers of Kansas found great opposition by local Indian Tribes, making early settlement extremely difficult.  Originally part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, present day Kansas was part of the Missouri Territory for 18 years.  From 1821-1854, the territory was unorganized.  Known as Kansas Territory in 1854, people began moving into the great rolling prairies.  After the Civil War, many veterans made homestead claims in Kansas.
