Iowa Census NotesIowa was officially part of Missouri Territory from 1812-1821. Between 1824 and 1834 it was considered to be unorganized Territory and between 1836 and 1838, it was part of Wisconsin Territory. In 1838, the area became The Territory of Iowa and finally achieved statehood in 1846. These facts can come into play when searching for ancestors in census records. See 1838-1870 Iowa Census Records at Ancestry. 1847 Sac & Fox Indian Census. These census rolls are special enumerations. These might prove helpful if your ancestor is of Native American heritage or lived with Native Americans. These are available for years 1836-1840 and 1847. See Sac & Fox Rolls at NARA. The 1836 census of Dubuque and Des Moines Counties is the first census taken after the area became Iowa Territory. See 1836 Iowa Census Records at Ancestry. Iowa State Census records have survived for 1841, 1844, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1856, 1859, 1862, 1867, 1869, 1881, 1885, 1889, 1895, 1905, 1915, and 1925 which was the last Iowa State Census taken. The 1856, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925 Iowa state censuses enumerated all counties, however earlier censuses were spotty, incomplete or offered only statistical information. See 1836-1925 Iowa State Census Records Collection at Ancestry and for more about Iowa State Census Records See Iowa State Census Information. Soundex code indexes for Federal Iowa census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, and 1920. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. 1890 Federal Iowa Census records including the special Veterans and Widows Census were completely destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census & Bridging the 1890 Census Gap, Learn what questions were asked in each census year and where to find census records online.
