Iowa

(Territory: 1838.  Statehood: 1846)

Dubuque was the first white settlement in what is today known as Iowa.  Prior to 1788, the main inhabitants were American Indians.  Once treaties had been established with the Indian tribes, settlers began moving in.  Most of the original white settlers came from the British Isles, followed later by Scandinavians, Dutch, German, Scottish and Welch.
