Iowa Census NotesIowa was officially part of Missouri Territory from 1812-1821. Between 1824 and 1834 it was considered to be unorganized Territory and between 1836 and 1838, it was part of Wisconsin Territory. In 1838, the area became The Territory of Iowa and finally achieved statehood in 1846. These facts can come into play when searching for ancestors in census records. See 1838-1870 Iowa Census Records at Ancestry. 1847 Sac & Fox Indian Census. These census rolls are special enumerations. These might prove helpful if your ancestor is of Native American heritage or lived with Native Americans. These are available for years 1836-1840 and 1847. See Sac & Fox Rolls at NARA. The 1836 census of Dubuque and Des Moines Counties is the first census taken after the area became Iowa Territory. See 1836 Iowa Census Records at Ancestry. Iowa (Territory: 1838. Statehood: 1846) Dubuque was the first white settlement in what is today known as Iowa. Prior to 1788, the main inhabitants were American Indians. Once treaties had been established with the Indian tribes, settlers began moving in. Most of the original white settlers came from the British Isles, followed later by Scandinavians, Dutch, German, Scottish and Welch.
