Iowa Census Notes
Iowa was
officially part of Missouri Territory from 1812-1821. Between 1824 and 1834 it was
considered to be unorganized Territory and between 1836 and 1838, it was part of Wisconsin
Territory. In 1838, the area became The Territory of Iowa and finally
achieved statehood in 1846. These facts can come into play when
searching for ancestors in census records. See

1847 Sac & Fox Indian Census. These census rolls are special enumerations. These might prove helpful if your ancestor is of Native American
heritage or lived with Native Americans. These are available for years
1836-1840 and 1847.

The 1836 census of Dubuque and Des Moines Counties is the
first census taken after the area became Iowa Territory.

Iowa
State Census records have survived for 1841, 1844, 1846, 1847, 1849, 1851, 1852,
1853, 1854, 1856, 1859, 1862, 1867, 1869, 1881, 1885, 1889, 1895, 1905, 1915,
and 1925 which was the last Iowa State Census taken. The 1856,
1885, 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925 Iowa state censuses enumerated all
counties, however earlier censuses were spotty, incomplete or offered
only statistical information.

Federal Iowa census records begin in 1840
and enumerations were taken ever 10 years thereafter. Census years available to the public include: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

records at the Iowa Dept. of Public Health begin in
1880.
Records
prior to 1880 must be obtained from County Clerks at the county
level.
Parentage
is not listed on death records prior to 1904.
Prior
to 1921, less than 50% of vital events were registered and that
percentage decreases the further back in time the event occurred.
