Georgia Census Notes

Federal Georgia Census Records are available to the public for census years: 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. See 1790-1940 Census Search at Ancestry.

1790-1810 Georgia Federal census records schedules are missing.  There is an 1800 Territorial Census for Oglethorpe County. Early Georgia tax lists 1792-1819 can prove helpful as a census substitute. These early census and tax records are included in the 1790-1890 Georgia Census Records at Ancestry.

The 1820 Federal Georgia census is missing schedules for Franklin, Rabun and Twiggs counties.

1890 Georgia Federal census records burned in a 1921 warehouse fire with the exception of remnants containing part of Columbus Town in Muscogee County.  Even the Georgia Veterans and Widows census schedules were lost. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census, Bridging the 1890 Census Gap and 1890 Census Fragment of Georgia.

Soundex code indexes for Federal Georgia census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930.

Georgia State Census Records:  There were numerous state census enumerations conducted between 1787 and 1879.  Sadly, only a few scattered years and remnants of these state census records have survived, however, the year 1859 is reported to be complete.  Following are other known Georgia state census years and some of the areas they cover:

1798 - Greene County

1827 - Taliferro County.

1834 - Various Localities.

1838-  Laurens, Newton and Tattnall Counties.

1845 - Fragments off various localities.

1852-1853  Various localities.

1859 - Supposedly, the entire state.

1865 - Fragments of various localities.

1879 - Columbia County.

Georgia

(Statehood 1788)

Many early settlers traveled from Virginia and the Carolinas to Georgia for the "land lottery".  Families were required to live in the territory for at least 1 year to be eligible for the drawings.  The drawings were held between 1803 and 1832, giving away tracts of land as large as 400 acres.
