Georgia (Statehood 1788) Many early settlers traveled from Virginia and the Carolinas to Georgia for the "land lottery". Families were required to live in the territory for at least 1 year to be eligible for the drawings. The drawings were held in 1803, 1806, 1819, 1827 and 1832, giving away tracts of land as large as 400 acres.
