Connecticut Census Notes
Colonial Connecticut Census Records include:
Grain Inventory for Hartford, Wethersfield and
Windsor. It lists the head of household, number of family members and how many bushels of grain each family
owned.
The 1670 Connecticut census is a reconstructed census substitute.
It was created by using tax, land, church, freeman and probate records for years 1667-1673. It
lists approximately 2300 individuals.
Other early Connecticut census records include 1756, 1762, 1774 and 1776. These statistical censuses
really don't offer much help to genealogy researchers.
Connecticut state census records are lacking. There are a few... 1779, 1782, 1798 direct tax documents
and an 1821 school census for Glastonbury but most of censuses will not
be very helpful to those doing genealogical research. See:
More detailed early census information.
The Connecticut Military Census Records of 1917 can be a useful tool in genealogy research
for this time period.
See: 1917 Connecticut Military Census.
Federal
Connecticut census records include census years: 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. These are all available to the public. See
1790-1940 Census Collection at Ancestry.
1890 Connecticut Federal census records were completely destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire. See A Fire Destroyed The 1890 Census
