Colorado Census Notes

New Mexico Territory was established in 1850 and included present day Colorado and Arizona.  Colorado Territory was separated from New Mexico Territory in 1861 and from Arizona Territory in 1863.  These facts are significant when searching genealogical & census records in these areas during these time periods.

Federal Colorado census records begin in 1870 and continue every 10 years including census years: 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930.  You may also find early Colorado residents in the 1850 and 1860 Federal census records for New Mexico. See 1790-1930 US Census Records at Ancestry.

1890 Colorado Federal Census records were destroyed by a 1921 warehouse fire including the Veterans and Widows schedules. See A Fire Destroyed the 1890 Census

Soundex code indexes for Federal Colorado census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900 and 1920.

Colorado state census records are known to exist for years: 1861, 1866 (partial) and 1885. See 1885 State Census of Colorado at Ancestry
