Colorado Census Notes New Mexico Territory was established in 1850 and included present day Colorado and Arizona. Colorado Territory was separated from New Mexico Territory in 1861 and Arizona Territory in 1863. These are important facts when searching census records in these areas during these time periods. Federal Colorado census records begin in 1870 and continue every 10 years including census years: 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 & 1930. You will find early Coloradoans in the 1850 and 1860 Federal census records for New Mexico. 1890 Colorado Federal Census records were destroyed by fire including the Veterans and Widows schedules. Soundex code indexes for Federal Colorado census records are available on microfilm for census years: 1880, 1900 and 1920. Colorado state census records are known to exist for years: 1861, 1866 (partial) and 1885. Learn what questions were asked in each census year and where to find census records online. Birth Records after 1910 are on file in the Dept. of Health above. Birth Records before 1910 are minimal and are on file with the County Registrars of each respective county. Death Records after 1900 are on file in the Dept. of Health above. Death Records before 1900 are minimal and are on file with the County Registrars of each respective county. Marriage records are on file with the Clerk of District Court in each respective county. A few exist as early as 1860 but in general, they were not kept until after 1881.
