California Census Notes Previous to 1821 California was under the rule of Spain. There are some censuses of the California Spanish Missions from the 1700s. See 1796-1798 California Spanish Mission Censuses at Ancestry 1821-1848 California was under the rule of Mexico. 1848 California became part of the United States. Federal California census records begin in 1850 and are available for census years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1940 US Census Records at Ancestry. California State Census Records: California did take a state census in 1852. The reason for this census is the 1850 Federal census missed the counties of Contra Costa, San Francisco and Santa Clara. Marriage Records 1987 - 1995 must be requested from county clerks in the individual counties. Divorce Records 1962-1984 are on file at the county level, however they are indexed at the above office. Records prior to 1905 are available from the offices of the County Clerks and County Recorders in each respective county.
