California Census Notes: Previous to 1821 California was under the rule of Spain. 1821-1848 California was under the rule of Mexico. 1848 California became part of the United States. Federal California census records begin in 1850 and are available for census years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. 1890 California Great Register: This register of voters was published in many California counties. It is now used a census substitute for the missing 1890 California census records. Learn what questions were asked in each census year and where to find census records online. Birth Records & Death Records 1905 - Present are on file at the above office. Marriage Records 1905 - 1986 are available in the above office. Marriage Records 1987 - 1995 must be requested from county clerks in the individual counties. Divorce Records 1962-1984 are on file at the county level, however they are indexed at the above office. Records prior to 1905 are available from the offices of the County Clerks and County Recorders in each respective county.
