Federal
California census records begin in 1850 and are available for census
years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930. See 1790-1930

California State Census Records:
California did take a state census in 1852. The reason for this
census is the 1850 Federal census missed the counties of Contra Costa,
San Francisco and Santa Clara.

1890 California Federal census records were completely destroyed in a 1921 warehouse fire.

1890 California Great Register: This register of voters was published in many California counties. It is now used a census substitute for the missing 1890 California census records.
