About Census Records at

Census Finder

Our mission is to provide access to all available census records online. This includes both free and paid subscriptions.  Our census directory can be found below.  Ancestry.com has completed every name indexing of all U.S. census records and the images are online. Search these in the searchbox to the right.

NOTE: Due to the many genealogy subscriptions online now, census records on CD Rom are becoming obsolete.

California Census Notes

Previous to 1821 California was under the rule of Spain.

1821-1848 California was under the rule of Mexico.

1848 California became part of the United States.

Federal California census records begin in 1850 and are available for census years: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930.

1890 California Great Register:   This register of voters was published in many California counties.  It is now used a census substitute for the missing 1890 California census records.
