Alabama Census Notes
Mobile Spanish Census records exist for years 1786, 1787, 1789 & 1805.
See 1786, 1787 & 1789 Spanish Censuses of the Mobile District.
Alabama was first included in the Territory of Mississippi
in 1798. In 1817, it became the Territory of Alabama and achieved statehood in 1819.
Federal census schedules for Alabama include: 1820 (partial), 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (partial), 1900, 1920, and 1930.

Special note about the 1820 Federal census records for Alabama: Much of the 1820 Federal Census for Alabama was lost.
All that remains are 1820 census schedules for the following counties: Baldwin, Conecuh, Dallas, Franklin, Limestone, Shelby, St. Clair and Wilcox.
1890 Alabama Federal census records were for the most part lost in a 1921 warehouse fire. However remnants of it
do exist for Perry County:
Perryville - Beat 11

Alabama State census records for years 1855 & 1866
survived and are available at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH). There is also an 1820 state census of which only part of Lawrence County survives.
