Alabama Census Notes

Mobile Spanish Census records exist for years 1786, 1787, 1789 & 1805. See 1786, 1787 & 1789 Spanish Censuses of the Mobile District.

Alabama was first included in the Territory of Mississippi in 1798.  In 1817, it became the Territory of Alabama  and  achieved statehood in 1819.

Federal census schedules for Alabama  include: 1820 (partial), 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (partial), 1900, 1920, and 1930.  See 1790-1940 Census Collection at Ancestry.

A Special note about the 1820 Federal census records for Alabama: Much of the 1820 Federal Census for Alabama was lost.  All that remains are 1820 census schedules for the following counties:  Baldwin, Conecuh, Dallas, Franklin, Limestone, Shelby, St. Clair and Wilcox.

1890 Alabama Federal census records were for the most part lost in a 1921 warehouse fire.  However remnants of it do exist for Perry County:

Perryville - Beat 11 & Severe - Beat 8. See 1890 Federal Census Fragments at Ancestry.

Alabama State census records for years 1855 & 1866 survived and are available at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH).  There is also an 1820 state census of which only part of Lawrence County survives. See: 1820-1866 Alabama State Census at Ancestry.

Special Alabama censuses include a 1907 Confederate census, and a 1921 Confederate census.
