Alabama Census Notes

Alabama was first included in the Territory of Mississippi 1798, Territory of Alabama 1817 and  achieved statehood in 1819.

Federal census schedules for Alabama  include: 1820 (partial), 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 (partial), 1900, 1920, and 1930.

Special note about the 1820 Federal census for Alabama.  Much of the 1820 Federal Census for Alabama was lost.  What remains are 1820 census schedules for the following counties:  Baldwin, Conecuh, Dallas, Franklin, Limestone, Shelby, St. Clair and Wilcox.

1890 Alabama Federal census records were for the most part lost in a fire.  However remnants of it exist for Perry County:

Perryville - Beat 11

Severe - Beat 8.

Alabama State census records for years 1855 & 1866 exist and are available at the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH).  There is also an 1820 state census of which only part of Lawrence County survives.

Special Alabama censuses include 1866 census of heads of households for both whites and African Americans, 1907 Confederate census, and 1921 Confederate census.

Mobile Spanish Census records exist for years 1786, 1787, 1789 & 1805.
